I took David to the ER yesterday. The clinic that we were going to was not able to see him until 4pm and even then they would have sent him to the er most likely anyway since the pain was in his chest. Sterling said that he had a problem in the sidewall of his chest but in the emergency room he was told after having blood drawn and a chest x ray that his problem with his stomach is gastroenteritis and was given Prilosec. I have tried to find the paper that he got from the hospital yesterday to give the exact name for the chest pain but basically what the Dr. said it is is the bone and the cartilage has tried to join together in places that are not suppose to join. The medicine that was given for it , for the pain is Tramadol. I can get the paper from him when he gets home from school and post the name of it for everyone that would like to know the exact name! He is right in saying that if he has not over come the pain then he will have to go to the er again and they will do further tests and go from there!!

David, that seems like a problem! So, they gave you meds to manage the pain, but what are they going to do about UN-fusing the bone and cartilage? Because, you can't stay on pain meds forever so they are going to have to fix the problem.

Gastroenterits, huh? Is that what Nathan has, too? Is there something you can do to fix/treat that? Any dietary changes, etc?

Wow, that does sound like a big problem. Did they say anything about how they can fix it or is this just something you'll have to deal with for the rest of your life? Did they test you for giardia with your stomach? I thought gastroenteritis was a fancy word for stomach-ache and that it normally goes away on its own. Kalen had girardia awhile back after a trip to Mexico and it was pretty miserable. It doesn't go away on its own either so he had to take some pretty hefty medications to get rid of it. You might ask about that.

Maybe it is swine flu!

Okay, so I googled "gastroenteritis" and it sounds to me like another misdiagnosis. Basically, I learned that that is a fancy name for a stomach virus, lasting 1-6 days or so!

Clearly, since it's something David has been battling for longer than that, it is something else. Was he clear to them on how long he has had the problem? It could be a parasite and Amy is right, he should be checked for giardia, etc. He needs to get in to some other doctor and demand a full work-up of testing to get to the bottom of why the CHRONIC problem.

I also just googled "Prilosec" and learned that it is used to treat gastro-esophageal reflux disease (chronic heartburn due to stomach conditions such as ulcer). That sounds a bit more like what he is dealing with.

Let me know if the medication works!

Did anyone ever find out what Nathan has?

So I made it in the room to catch only the end of the Dr telling him about his "problems" so he didn't ask any questions to see if anything was going to correct the problem. More likely than not I will be taking him to the clinic with all of the info that we have gotten thus far from all Dr.'s and see what can be done. I will be taking Nathan at the same time since he is still having problems! Oh, the name of the other thing that the Dr said is his problem in his chest is called Costochondritis.

David, (and Susannah),
I googled costochondritis and it sounds like the only treatment is the pain medication and with that and rest it should improve. But also it said that it can exist with other things as well including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease which both affect the digestive system and could explain the trouble you've been having with your stomach. Maybe when you go back to the doctor you can ask specifically about those things in addition to asking about a parasite. Good luck. Keep us posted.

I had a dream about giving you a sisterly lecture so I felt I should come give you one on your blog instead!

I THINK I read on Facebook recently that you are drinking 3 or 4 Dr. Peppers a day? (Was this part of my dream?) If not, you MUST stop and drink milk and water only for a while! If this is true, no wonder your stomach is a mess. Soda is yummy, I agree, but it is full of acid and chemicals and was never meant to be our sole source of hydration.

There. Sisterly lecture delivered.

Okay, this is in response to Alison's comment that she heard you were drinking that many Dr. Peppers per day. I have heard about people thinking that they are having a heart attack and once they undergo all sorts of testing to rule out everything, they find out that it is all the caffeine in their sodas that they drink. Diet drinks are the worst but any of them will wreak havoc on your body if you are drinking that much. Wouldn't hurt to cut back a little if that's true...

I would agree with them on the cutting back on the sodas. I very rarely drink any anymore and when I do it is caffeine free coke which is for when I am seriously suffering from the sickness of pregnancy. You should give it a shot for a few days to a week and see how it makes you feel.

I am taking him to the clinic tomorrow so I will mention his soda intake to the Dr.
